German scientific vocabulary is unusually transparent here, because it built its terms from native roots where English borrowed from Greek and Latin. Der Schmelzpunkt is the point at which something melts; der Sauerstoff is the "sour substance", oxygen; der Wasserstoff is the "water substance", hydrogen. Once the pattern is seen, a great many terms decode themselves.
