Shifts, plant and the vocabulary of an industrial region in transition.
Mining shaped whole German regions and left its words behind even where the pits have closed: die Zeche, die Halde, der Strukturwandel. That last one is the standard term for the long economic restructuring of such an area, and it appears constantly in reporting about the Ruhr and Lusatia. The shift vocabulary — Früh-, Spät-, Nachtschicht — is still current in any factory.
