Ships and ports
Vessels, harbour work and the coastal vocabulary of the German north.
A large part of this vocabulary comes from Low German and reached standard German through the northern ports, which is why so much of it looks like English: das Boot and boat, der Mast and mast, segeln and sail. English borrowed most of its own nautical terms from Dutch and Low German too, so this is one area where guessing works unusually often.
