La lettre du voisin

A note in the letterbox, and an afternoon that turns out differently.

A text that shows how French becomes polite without sounding stiff: pourriez-vous, ça ne me dérange pas, avec plaisir. Notice when the speakers switch from tu to vous — and when they switch back.

Dans la boîte il y avait une enveloppe sans timbre. Dedans, une feuille avec quelques lignes: « Bonjour, je suis le voisin du deuxième étage. Pourriez-vous me laisser mettre le vélo sous l’escalier pendant deux semaines? Merci. Paul. »

Julie a lu la feuille deux fois. L’escalier est serré et le vélo est grand, mais le voisin est gentil et il n’a jamais fait de bruit. Elle a décidé de répondre oui.

Elle est montée au deuxième étage et elle a sonné. Paul a ouvert avec une serviette à la main. Il a ri et il a dit: pardon, je nettoyais la salle de bains. Puis ils ont parlé dix minutes à la porte.

Lui, il travaille dans une petite entreprise, de l’autre côté de la ville. La voiture est chez le garage et avec le vélo il arrive en vingt minutes. Julie a dit: avec plaisir, mettez-le sous l’escalier.

Le soir Julie a trouvé une autre feuille. Cette fois il y avait deux lignes seulement: « Merci beaucoup. Si vous avez besoin de pain ou de lait, je suis au deuxième. » En bas, un numéro de téléphone.
