Living and the household

The rooms, the furniture and what is done to keep them.

These are the words of an advertisement, a viewing and a Saturday morning. The fourth entry, l'étage, is where a reader can end up on the wrong landing. French counts floors above the ground: the entrance level is le rez-de-chaussée and is not numbered at all, so le premier étage is one flight up and le deuxième étage is two. British English does the same thing with different words — ground floor, first floor, second floor — but American English calls the entrance level the first floor, so le deuxième étage comes out as the third floor there. The lift buttons say it plainly: a French lift has a button marked RC or 0 and no 1 at street level.
