Le train de sept heures
A journey, a missed connection and a conversation on the platform.
The first text in the past tense. Look at which verbs take je suis and which take j’ai: partir, arriver, rester and venir take être, and the participle then agrees with the person speaking — a woman here, so with an e.
Hier je suis partie à sept heures. Le train est arrivé avec dix minutes de retard, mais pour moi ça allait: j’ai acheté un café et j’ai lu le journal du matin.
Dans le train j’ai trouvé une place près de la fenêtre. Dehors il pleuvait. J’ai regardé les champs, les petits villages, une longue rivière. Puis j’ai dormi une demi-heure.
À Lyon j’ai raté la correspondance. Le train pour Marseille était déjà parti. Je suis sortie et je suis allée au bureau de la gare. La femme a dit que le prochain était à onze heures.
J’ai attendu sur le quai. Il y avait un homme avec un vélo et un grand sac. Nous avons parlé du temps, puis du travail. Lui, il va à Marseille chaque semaine et il connaît tous les trains.
À onze heures nous sommes montés ensemble. Le voyage a duré une heure. Quand je suis arrivée, le soleil était revenu. Je n’ai plus pensé au retard du matin.
