A common trap

Wrong Sou trinta anos.

Right Tenho trinta anos.

Building age with ser says that you are the years. Sou trinta anos is not a sentence any Portuguese speaker has heard, and the same slip produces sou fome and sou frio. It is the commonest trap of the first month, and it is English's doing entirely: « I am thirty », « I am hungry », « I am cold » all begin the same way, and none of the three begins that way here.
