Which bin, which day and which bottle gets money back.

Sorting waste is not a preference in German-speaking countries but a set of rules with a bin for each, and a newcomer meets them in the first week. Two things have no English equivalent and are worth knowing before the first shop: das Pfand is a deposit paid on a bottle and handed back at a machine, and der Gelbe Sack is the bag that packaging goes in and nothing else.
