Telling the time, naming a period, and the twenty-four hour clock that appears on every German timetable.

Written German almost always uses the twenty-four hour clock: 14:30 Uhr, said vierzehn Uhr dreißig. Spoken German uses the twelve-hour forms with halb and Viertel, and those count forward to the coming hour rather than back from the last — halb drei is half past two. When an appointment matters, the twenty-four hour form is the one that cannot be misread.
