Haematology

Blood read as a report on the whole body: its cells, its clotting and the bag on the drip stand.

One entry on this list looks like English and is not quite. Der Quick-Wert, on the ward usually shortened to der Quick, is not the adjective but a surname: Armand Quick, an American physician, devised the clotting test behind it in the 1930s. English-speaking laboratories report the same test as the prothrombin time, in seconds, or as the INR; German-speaking ones kept his name and turned the result into a percentage of normal. So der Quick ist gesunken means that the blood now clots more slowly than it should, and a German report that prints the INR beside it shows the two moving in opposite directions: as the Quick falls, the INR rises. Read the name as a name, and the number as a share of what a healthy person would reach. These pages explain words and give no medical advice.
