German names its own countryside in detail and borrows very little for it, so this is where a learner meets the largest number of words with no cognate to lean on: die Amsel, die Buche, der Harsch. It is also the area where small talk actually happens — the weather is not a cliché here but the opening of most conversations with a stranger.
