One small grammatical bonus here: the four compass points are all masculine, as are the seasons, the months and the days of the week, so an entire field of vocabulary comes with its article already settled. Note also that der Norden is the noun and nördlich the adjective; German does not use the noun as a modifier the way English does in "north wind" — that is der Nordwind, one word.
