Trees and the forest

The trees a German forest is made of, and the words for managing one.

Almost every German tree name is feminine — die Eiche, die Buche, die Birke, die Fichte — with der Ahorn as the exception worth remembering. The forest itself carries a vocabulary of management that has no everyday English equivalent: die Schonung is an area closed off while it grows back, and aufforsten is planting a forest where one was felled.
