Waste separation is a daily fact of German life and has its own vocabulary: der Restmüll for what is left, das Altpapier for paper, der Biomüll for food waste, der Gelbe Sack for packaging, and das Altglas sorted by colour into containers that may not be used on Sundays. Landscape words are worth having because German place names are made of them. -berg, -tal, -feld, -wald, -bach, -furt and -au turn up in thousands of town names, so a reader who knows the words can often read a map.
