Office work and documents in German

Meetings, files, deadlines — and the fixed phrases a German business letter is built from.

German office writing is more formulaic than its English equivalent, and the formulas are worth learning as whole phrases rather than word by word: Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren to open, Mit freundlichen Grüßen to close, anbei or in der Anlage for an attachment. The opening is followed by a comma and the next line starts with a small letter, which looks wrong to an English eye and is correct.
