Transport and travel

Town, directions, trains and planes, traffic, trips, hotels.

What holds these lists together

Directions in many northern Chinese cities are given by the compass rather than by left and right: 往(wǎng)北(běi)走(zǒu), go north. The compass itself is said the other way round — south-east is 东南(dōngnán), east-south, with east and west always first. Travelling takes a verb for the way you sit: 坐(zuò) for anything you ride in as a passenger, from a bus to a plane, 骑(qí) for anything you sit astride, such as a bicycle, and 开(kāi) when you drive. The means of travel comes before the verb of going: 我(wǒ)坐(zuò)地铁(dìtiě)去(qù), I go by underground, is literally "I sit underground go". The lists run from the street corner and the first train ticket to the city plan and the routes goods travel.

The category runs across the levels — it is an area, not a difficulty. If you practise it, you can also choose a level at the top of the practice page and then get only the part that sits there.
