Shopping, clothes and money

Shops, online shopping, clothes, fashion, the bank, personal finance.

What holds these lists together

Money has two names, one for speech and one for print. A price tag says 元(yuán); somebody saying the same price out loud says 块(kuài), and a tenth of it is 毛(máo). Discounts are counted the other way round from English: 打(dǎ)八(bā)折(zhé) means you pay eighty per cent, which is twenty per cent off, and learners regularly read it as the reverse. Clothes take two verbs where English uses "wear" for everything: 穿(chuān) for clothes and shoes, 戴(dài) for hats, glasses, watches and jewellery — roughly, what you put on rather than get into. Asking for a better price is ordinary at a market and odd in a department store: 便宜(piányi)一点儿(yìdiǎnr)吧(ba). The lists run from the till to the bank, the online shop and the language of fashion.

Spread across the levels

The category runs across the levels — it is an area, not a difficulty. If you practise it, you can also choose a level at the top of the practice page and then get only the part that sits there.
