Body and health

Body parts, illness, the doctor, medicine, first aid.

What holds these lists together

Saying where it hurts uses a shape Chinese uses everywhere: first the topic, then a comment on it. 我(wǒ)头(tóu)疼(téng) is literally "I, head hurts", with no "my" and no "have". Illness takes verbs English would not choose: a fever is sent out, 发烧(fāshāo), and 感冒(gǎnmào) is both the cold and catching it, so 我(wǒ)感冒(gǎnmào)了(le) is "I have a cold", the 了(le) saying that the state has arrived. Seeing a doctor usually means a hospital, where the first step is to register at a counter, 挂号(guàhào). Two kinds of medicine stand side by side, 西医(xīyī) and 中医(zhōngyī), Western and traditional Chinese, and their vocabularies differ. The lists climb from the parts of the body to diagnosis, treatment and recovery.

Spread across the levels

The category runs across the levels — it is an area, not a difficulty. If you practise it, you can also choose a level at the top of the practice page and then get only the part that sits there.
