Vapurla işe
Jonas works in İstanbul for two years and takes the ferry to the office every morning.
Memories looking back. Watch -iyordu for what happened again and again (biniyordu, söylüyordu), where English says “used to” or “would”, and the participles before the noun: martılara ekmek atan insanlar “the people who threw bread to the gulls”, ilk öğrendiği cümle “the first sentence he learnt”.
Her sabah vapura biniyordu. Vapurda çay içip martılara ekmek atan insanları izlemek, günün en sevdiği zamanıydı.
İş yerinde herkes ona çok yardım etti. İş arkadaşları ona her gün birkaç yeni Türkçe cümle öğretti. Jonas'ın ilk öğrendiği cümle “Kolay gelsin!” oldu, çünkü bunu herkes herkese söylüyordu.
Altı ay sonra Jonas toplantılarda Türkçe konuşmaya başladı. Hâlâ hata yapıyor, ama artık kimse ona İngilizce cevap vermiyor.
