Turkish verbs: aorist and -iyor, by pattern

All 406, each with the dictionary form, the aorist and the present in -iyor in the third person, the English meaning, the case the verb takes and an example sentence — sorted by how they build their forms, not by the alphabet.

Why by pattern

In the English sense, hardly any Turkish verb is irregular: every tense is attached to the same stem, and the endings follow vowel harmony. There is no go – went – gone here. What differs from verb to verb is only which aorist it takes — -r after a vowel, -ar/-er after a one-syllable stem, -ır/-ir/-ur/-ür after a longer one — and whether its stem softens when an ending begins with a vowel: gitmek → gidiyor, etmek → ediyor. The 406 verbs below are sorted by exactly these two questions. Learn the group and you have every verb in it at once.

The one group you really learn by heart is the thirteen one-syllable verbs that take -ir against the rule: gelir, alır, bulur, görür and nine more. They are also the most frequent verbs in the language.

What the aorist and -iyor are for

The present in -iyor says what is happening now or these days, much like the English present continuous: Şu an kitap okuyor. The aorist (geniş zaman, the “broad tense”) says what usually, always or generally holds, like the English simple present — and it is the form of polite requests: Her gün kitap okur., Bir çay alır mısınız? Both appear in the table in the third person singular: okur means “he or she reads (as a rule)”, okuyor “he or she is reading”. Under every verb is the case it takes — bakmak “to look at” takes the dative, korkmak “to be afraid of” the ablative.

406 verbs.

Vowel stem: aorist in -r

96 verbs

If the stem ends in a vowel, the aorist only adds an -r: okur, bekler, anlar, yürür. This is the easiest group — and the one where the present in -iyor has some work to do: the vowel at the end of the stem drops and is replaced by the harmonising -i- of the ending. bekle- becomes bekliyor, anla- anlıyor, söyle- söylüyor, oyna- oynuyor. Which i it becomes is decided by the vowel before, not by the a or e that drops. If the stem ends in i, ı, u or ü, it simply stays: okuyor, yürüyor.

That is the rule, and the thirteen verbs two groups further on are the exceptions to it — if in doubt, say -ar/-er with a one-syllable verb and you will almost always be right. A t at the end of the stem stays where it is here: yatıyor, satar, itiyor, bitiyor. Only a few verbs soften it, and they have a group of their own.

The thirteen one-syllable verbs with -ır/-ir/-ur/-ür

33 verbs

Thirteen one-syllable verbs do not follow the -ar/-er rule but take four-way harmony in the aorist, like a verb of several syllables: alır, bilir, bulur, durur, gelir, görür, kalır, olur, ölür, sanır, varır, verir, vurur. Nearly all of them are verbs you need in your first week, so they are worth learning as a list. Everything else about them is regular — geliyor, geldi, gelecek — and the negative is the same for every verb anyway: gelmez, almaz. Compound verbs with almak, vermek or olmak inherit the exception: satın alır, karar verir, kaybolur. That is the whole of Turkish verb irregularity — thirteen aorists.
