Komşunun kedisi

A week looking after the neighbour’s cat — and suddenly the cat is gone.

The story is told in the past in -di. At the end comes -miş: çıkmış, gezmiş — the narrator did not see it but works it out. And the neighbour is called Ayten Teyze: older neighbours are often called “auntie”.

Geçen hafta komşum Ayten Teyze kızının yanına, Ankara'ya gitti. Bana kedisini bıraktı. Kedinin adı Pamuk.

Ayten Teyze bana bir liste verdi: “Sabah ve akşam kediyi besle. Suyunu her gün değiştir. Akşam pencereyi kapat.”

İlk gün her şey iyiydi. Pamuk yemeğini yedi ve koltukta uyudu.

Ama ikinci gün Pamuk yoktu! Her yerde aradım: dolapta, yatağın altında, balkonda. Hiçbir yerde yoktu.

Çok korktum. O zaman bahçeden bir kedi geldi: Pamuk! Pencere açıktı. Pamuk açık pencereden çıkmış ve bahçede gezmiş.

Ayten Teyze dönünce ona pencereyi anlatmadım. Sadece “Pamuk çok iyi bir kedi,” dedim.
