Hasta bir gün

Emre has a temperature, rings the office and has to go to the doctor’s.

Two past tenses side by side, much like English “went” and “was aching”: -di for what happened (aradı, gitti), and -iyordu for the state behind it (başı ağrıyordu, “his head was aching”). The doctor uses -meli, “you must”: kalmalısınız. And Geçmiş olsun is what you say to anyone who is ill.

Pazartesi sabahı Emre uyandı ama kalkamadı. Başı çok ağrıyordu ve ateşi vardı. Boğazı da ağrıyordu.

Önce patronunu aradı: “Bugün işe gelemem, hastayım.” Patronu “Geçmiş olsun, iyi dinlen,” dedi.

Sonra doktordan randevu aldı. Saat on birde doktora gitti. Orada çok hasta vardı. Emre bir saat bekledi.

Doktor Emre'nin boğazına ve kulaklarına baktı. “Grip olmuşsunuz,” dedi. “Üç gün evde kalmalısınız. Çok su için ve dinlenin.”

Doktor ona bir ilaç yazdı. Emre eczaneden ilacı aldı ve eve döndü. Annesi ona sıcak bir çorba getirdi. Emre çorbayı içti ve hemen uyudu.
