What holds these lists together

Everything you say about yourself and your own home: who you live with, what is in the flat, what you wear, how you feel, and what happens when something breaks. Together these lists are the best practice for the Portuguese plural, which does not simply add an «s». Words in -ão split three ways — a mão, as mãos; o pão, os pães; o colchão, os colchões — and o homem becomes os homens. The family words hold a trap of their own: os pais are your parents, while os parentes are your relatives, and the resemblance to the English word points straight at the wrong one.
