Food and drink
Groceries and meals, ordering in a restaurant and a milk bar, cooking and seasoning.
What holds these lists together
Meals in Poland keep a slightly different rhythm from Britain or America: obiad is the hot main meal in the early afternoon, kolacja in the evening is often cold, and soup is very often part of it, from żurek to barszcz. With the words comes a case: wherever English says “some” or “a glass of”, Polish needs the genitive — szklanka wody, trochę chleba. The lists go from breakfast through ordering to the recipe, and the milk bar, the bar mleczny, has an entry of its own, because nothing quite like it exists in English-speaking countries.
For example: chleb (bread), menu (menu), bar mleczny (milk bar (cheap canteen)), smażyć (to fry), kasza (groats, grain)
