What holds these lists together
A Japanese home begins at the 玄関, the step inside the front door where shoes come off, and two fixed phrases belong to it: ただいま on coming in and おかえりなさい in reply. Clothes are put on with different verbs depending on where they go — 着る for the upper body, はく for trousers, skirts and shoes, かぶる for a hat — where English manages with "put on" for all of them, and learners who pick one verb for everything are understood but noticed. Renting a flat brings words a newcomer meets on the first contract and nowhere before it, such as 敷金, the deposit, and 礼金, a payment to the landlord that does not come back.
