N2  ·  40 words

Everyday nouns at N2

The nouns of ordinary household and neighbourhood life that a first course never gets round to.

These are words for things everyone handles and does — rubbish days, small talk, the gap under a door, the moment between two jobs — and they are easiest to learn by their parts. 手(て) stands for effort and reach as well as the hand: 手間(てま) is the trouble something takes, 手元(てもと) what you have within reach, 手(て)ぶら arriving with nothing in your hands. 物(もの) at the front means “things in general”: 物音(ものおと) is a sound you cannot place, 物忘(ものわす)れ forgetting things. Several also work as verbs with する, and the notes say which.
