Food and drink
The table, the kitchen, the restaurant and the field the food came from.
What holds these lists together
Japanese food vocabulary puts the meal before the food. ご飯 is cooked rice and also a meal in general, so 朝ご飯 is breakfast whatever is on the plate, while the uncooked rice on a shop shelf is お米. Eating has its own frame of phrases: いただきます before the first bite and ごちそうさまでした after the last, said at home as much as in a restaurant. Taste is described more finely than English usually bothers to: 甘辛い is sweet and salty at once, the flavour of a soy-and-sugar glaze, and has no single English word. The lists run from the first meal words through the kitchen and the restaurant to the farm, the harbour and the label on the packet.
