Food and drink

Meals, everyday food, drinks, tastes and what is on the table.

The word for cooked rice, ご飯(はん), is also the word for a meal, and the names of the three meals are built on it: 朝(あさ)ご飯(はん), 昼(ひる)ご飯(はん), 晩(ばん)ご飯(はん). Several food words carry a polite お or ご that has become part of the word — お茶(ちゃ), お酒(さけ), お菓子(かし) — and dropping it sounds rough rather than casual. Note also that you "drink" medicine and soup in Japanese, with 飲(の)む.
