At home

Rooms, furniture, the things that switch on and off, and the verbs of an ordinary day at home.

A Japanese home mixes two kinds of room: Western rooms with a ベッド and a ソファ, and Japanese rooms laid with 畳(たたみ), where a 布団(ふとん) comes out of the 押(お)し入(い)れ at night. Shoes come off in the 玄関(げんかん), and the bath, お風呂(ふろ), is a separate room from the toilet. The verbs come in pairs worth learning together: you 開(あ)ける a window and 閉(し)める it, つける the light and 消(け)す it.
