La prima mattina

A first day at work, from six o’clock to the first break.

The easiest text in this series. Everything is in the present tense, the sentences are short, and the story is one everybody knows. Notice how often the subject pronoun is missing — the verb ending already says who is meant, and that is exactly how Italian works at this level.

Lena si sveglia alle sei. È ancora scuro e la camera è fredda. Fa un tè e lo beve alla finestra. La strada è tranquilla. Un uomo cammina con il cane.

Oggi Lena comincia il lavoro nuovo. Il cappotto è alla porta. Mangia pane e formaggio. Lava il bicchiere. Alle sette esce nel freddo.

L’autobus arriva tardi. Una donna con un bambino piccolo aspetta. Il bambino guarda Lena e Lena dice ciao. Poi arriva l’autobus. È pieno e Lena sta alla porta.

Alle otto è là. Un uomo apre la porta. Tu sei Lena, dice. Io sono Bruno. Questo è il tuo tavolo. Il tavolo è vicino alla finestra. È molto pulito.

Alle undici Bruno porta il caffè. Parlano del tempo e della pioggia. Lena è stanca, ma è contenta. La prima mattina finisce.
