What holds these lists together

School and work in India run on two languages, and the vocabulary shows it: an ऑफ़िस and a दफ़्तर are the same place, and a form may say आवेदन where people say अप्लाई करना. Exams are given rather than taken — परीक्षा देना — and results, marks and admissions are a subject of conversation in every family. The lists go from naming jobs to the classroom, from education as a system to the meetings, emails and deadlines of an office.
