India: festivals, society and two registers
Festivals and customs, the words of public life, and the two words Hindi often has for one thing.
What holds these lists together
These lists are about a place rather than a subject. The festivals follow the calendar and the faiths of India — होली, दिवाली, ईद, गुरुपर्व — and each has its own greetings and customs. Public life has a vocabulary of elections, government and rights that the news uses every day. And Hindi often has two words for one thing, one from Sanskrit and one from Persian or English: ज़रूरी and आवश्यक, मदद and सहायता. The first is said at home, the second written on forms and read out in the news, and knowing both is knowing how Hindi is used in India.
