Festivals

Diwali, Holi, Eid and Christmas, lamps and sweets, fasting and feasting, and how to wish someone well.

A festival is “celebrated” with मनाना: हम दिवाली मनाते हैं. Good wishes are sent with मुबारक हो or की शुभकामनाएँ — ईद मुबारक, दिवाली की शुभकामनाएँ. Names of festivals have a gender like any noun: दिवाली, होली and ईद are feminine, दशहरा and क्रिसमस masculine.
