Home, clothes and the daily round
Rooms and furniture, clothes, the day from waking to sleeping, and running a household.
What holds these lists together
A home in India is often shared by more than two generations, and its vocabulary reflects it: the courtyard and the roof are places where life happens, not just parts of a building, and छत पर, on the roof, is where clothes dry and kites fly. Clothes come in two sets, the Indian and the Western, and both are everyday: कुरता and जींस in the same wardrobe. The daily routine is mostly verbs, many of them reflexive in feeling if not in form — नहाना, to bathe; तैयार होना, to get ready — and the B1 list adds what it takes to keep a household going.
