Food and drink
What is eaten and drunk, cooking and eating out, and the dishes of Indian kitchens.
What holds these lists together
Food is where Hindi is richest and most regional. A meal is built from a few staples — दाल, चावल, रोटी, सब्ज़ी — and the words for cooking them are precise: frying in a little oil is not frying in a lot, and tempering spices in hot ghee has a verb of its own. Eating out ranges from a stall at the roadside to a restaurant with a menu in English, and the polite phrases of being a guest — being offered more, and refusing once — matter as much as the names of dishes. The last list gathers the dishes, spices and sweets a learner meets in India.
