Shopping, money and the city
Buying and bargaining, prices, the bank, and the bills and offices of life in town.
What holds these lists together
Money in Hindi is counted in its own steps: a लाख is a hundred thousand and a करोड़ ten million, and prices, salaries and the news use them rather than millions. Shopping has its own small grammar — कितने का है?, how much is it?, and थोड़ा कम कीजिए when there is room to bargain. The B1 lists move from the market to the bank counter and to the rest of a life in town: rent, the electricity bill, a form to fill in, a queue to stand in, and the office that sends you to another office.
