घर is both the building and home; मकान is only the building. In much of India the flat roof, छत, is used for drying clothes and sleeping on hot nights, and the same word means the ceiling. Learn the gender with each object: मेज़, कुर्सी and खिड़की are feminine, दरवाज़ा, पलंग and पंखा masculine.
