Particle verbs you cannot guess

Separable verbs whose stem and particle, taken apart, tell you nothing about the whole.

Most verbs on this page cannot be worked out from their parts, and one of them shows why: each part once meant something quite literal, and the literal thing has since disappeared. Abkupfern is what a student does with somebody else’s essay, and inside it sits das Kupfer, copper. Before photography, a painting was reproduced by engraving it on a copper plate and printing from the plate; the result was der Kupferstich, the copper engraving. To make one of somebody else’s picture was therefore to copy it. The plates went out of use, the verb stayed, and it kept only the copying. Today it is colloquial and faintly contemptuous: Er hat die Hälfte abgekupfert is an accusation, not a description of a craft.
