Passwords and account security

What actually protects an account, and what only looks as if it does.

One verb on this list looks like an old acquaintance and turns out to be only half of one. Kompromittieren has the shape of « to compromise », but it has kept just one of the two jobs the English verb does. It is the word for what has happened to an account once somebody else holds the key — Das Konto ist kompromittiert — and, away from computers, for what a leaked photograph does to a politician: it exposes him and damages his standing. It never means meeting someone halfway. German gives that sense to the noun alone: einen Kompromiss eingehen or einen Kompromiss schließen is to reach one, and kompromissbereit is willing to. The verb also needs an object, so Wir sollten kompromittieren is not a German sentence at all, while Die Zugangsdaten sind kompromittiert describes an emergency rather than a negotiation.
