Springback has two German shapes, and the part of speech decides which. The noun takes the short prefix: die Rückfederung, like die Rückkehr, die Rückgabe and der Rückzug. The verb takes the full adverb, and it separates: Das Blech federt nach dem Biegen zurück; in a subordinate clause the two halves meet again, weil das Blech zurückfedert. English says “back” in both places, so the tempting mistakes are a verb rückfedern and a noun die Zurückfederung, and neither is the form a toolmaker uses. The pattern is wide but not universal — die Zurückhaltung keeps the long form — so each noun is learned with its prefix. The verb is the safer half: when it splits, the piece that goes to the end of the clause is zurück.
