This page describes institutions and the words for them; it takes no position on any of them. A few structural facts make the vocabulary easier to hold. Germany, Austria and Switzerland are all federal, so power is divided between a national level and a regional one — das Bundesland in Germany and Austria, der Kanton in Switzerland. Germany calls its constitution das Grundgesetz rather than die Verfassung, a name chosen in 1949 to mark it as provisional. It is still in force.
