Keys, joins and transactions — and what a backup is worth on the day it has to be restored.

The verb this list is written towards is wiederherstellen, to restore, and it carries two particles instead of one. Both leave the stem together and go to the end of the clause: Wir stellen die Datenbank wieder her. In the participle the ge slips in behind them, wiederhergestellt, and the zu of an infinitive takes the same slot: Es gelang, sie wiederherzustellen. The pattern is worth fixing early, because the most familiar verb that begins the same way does the opposite. Wiederholen, to repeat, is inseparable: Er wiederholt die Abfrage, with the participle wiederholt and no ge anywhere. Only in the rarer sense of fetching something back does it come apart, holt … wieder, wiedergeholt. So when an incident report ends a sentence on wieder her, nothing has been lost from it; the verb has simply split at the one point German allows, and the meaning is waiting at the end of the line.
