Weighing and qualifying
The turns between sentences that say how firmly the next one is meant.
Most of these words say nothing about the world and a great deal about how firmly the next sentence is meant. One of them shows how German builds such words. Nichtsdestoweniger is English none the less, assembled piece by piece: nichts, then desto — the word that answers je in je länger, desto besser, where English also says the — and finally weniger. The two languages made the same construction; one writes it as a single word, the other as three. Nichtsdestotrotz is a later blend: it keeps the front of that word and swaps weniger for the trotz of trotzdem. It started out as a joke and is now ordinary German. The rest of the list sorts itself the same way, by register rather than by meaning: obschon and obwohl concede the same thing, and only one of them belongs in a letter to a friend.
