People, family and feelings

Family, relatives, character, relationships, feelings.

What holds these lists together

The family words are the first place where Chinese draws lines English does not. A brother or a sister is almost never just that: an older brother is 哥哥(gēge), a younger one 弟弟(dìdi), an older sister 姐姐(jiějie), a younger one 妹妹(mèimei). The grandparents differ by side: your father’s mother is 奶奶(nǎinai), your mother’s mother 姥姥(lǎolao) in the north and 外婆(wàipó) in the south. The same words reach beyond the family: a child calls a friendly man of its parents’ age 叔叔(shūshu), uncle, without any relation at all. Feelings bring a second surprise. A word such as 高兴(gāoxìng) needs no verb "to be" — 我(wǒ)很(hěn)高兴(gāoxìng) is a whole sentence, and the 很(hěn) in it is a link more than a "very". The lists climb from happy and sad to the finer shades of feeling and the words of psychology.
