Family, people and feelings
Family and relatives, neighbours and friends, and what people feel for each other.
What holds these lists together
With the family Turkish draws lines that English does not. An uncle is amca if he is your father’s brother and dayı if he is your mother’s; an aunt is hala or teyze. Older brothers and sisters have words of their own, abla and ağabey, and they are also used to address people who are no relation at all. Feelings often want a case: if you are afraid, you are afraid “from” something, in the ablative, köpekten korkuyorum. The lists lead from the family tree via feelings to neighbours, friendships, character and mood.
For example: anne (mother), duygu (feeling, emotion), mahalle (neighbourhood, quarter), arkadaşlık (friendship), kaygı (anxiety, worry)
