La marca and our « mark » look like one word and hardly ever are. In Spanish la marca is the brand and the registered trade mark — una marca registrada, marcas de lujo — and it is the record in sport as well: batió la marca mundial. What English calls a « mark » is something different every time: the one on paper is la señal or la mancha, the one on a pupil's work is la nota, and the one you aim at is el blanco. Only « brand » travels back cleanly, and even it will not carry the record.
