What holds these lists together

The business pages of a Spanish newspaper, the papers from a bank, the tax return and the annual accounts belong together because they ask the same question: where does a figure come from, and who is entitled to it? Several words there carry more than they seem to. Un billón is a million million, not a thousand million; what English calls a billion is mil millones, and a misread headline is out by a factor of a thousand. La renta is income, so la declaración de la renta is the tax return and has nothing to do with rent. And la facturación is usually a firm’s turnover, not its invoicing.
