El ejercicio is exercise: the kind done in a gym and the kind a teacher sets. It is also the financial year. El ejercicio 2024 is the year the accounts cover, el ejercicio económico is the phrase written out in full, and cerrar el ejercicio is to close the year off. English calls its own accounting stretch a year or a period and keeps « exercise » for the body and the classroom. The Latin root is about keeping something going, which is what a business does across a year and what a muscle does across a session; the two languages simply parted company over which of the two to name with it.
