A primeira manhã

A first day at work, from six o’clock to the first break.

The easiest text in this series. Everything is in the present tense, the sentences are short, and the story is one everybody knows. Notice how often the subject pronoun is missing — the verb ending already says who is meant, and that is exactly how Portuguese works at this level.

Hoje a Ana começa o trabalho novo. O casaco está à porta. Come pão com queijo e lava o copo. Às sete sai para o frio.

O autocarro chega tarde.

Você é a Ana, diz ele. Eu sou o Bruno.

A primeira manhã acaba bem.
