Parts of the body, saying where it hurts, colds and medicine.
Where English says "I have a headache", Japanese names the part and says it hurts: 頭が痛いです, literally "head hurts". The same frame — body part, が, adjective — describes almost any complaint, and many ordinary descriptions of people as well: 背が高いis tall耳が遠いis hard of hearing Some words cover more than their English partner: 足 is both leg and foot, and 指 both finger and toe.
